The challenge

Millions of LGBTQ+ individuals worldwide encounter significant obstacles in accessing healthcare services, despite being the least served.

In our research, we discovered significant issues with the current healthcare system failing the LGBTQ+ community, based on interviews with LGBTQ+ individuals, healthcare professionals, and market analysis.

  • 23% of LGBTQ+ people have witnessed discriminatory remarks made by healthcare staff.

  • 1 in 5 Black, Asian, and minority ethnic LGBTQ+ individuals have refrained from seeking treatment and support.

  • 80% of trans respondents who tried accessing gender identity clinics reported encountering difficulties, with waiting times of up to 5 years.

This audio clip highlights discrimination, judgment, and lack of representation experienced by LGBTQ+ individuals in healthcare.

The healthcare sector's approach towards LGBTQ+ healthcare is fragmented, with limited resources, stigmatization, and ineffective communication. While the COVID-19 pandemic has transformed healthcare delivery towards remote services, digital infrastructure challenges and integrated care's numerous challenges have limited its potential successes, such as improved monitoring and accessibility.

Patient Outcomes

Remote clinical services can help patients access healthcare professionals easily and in a personalized manner. LVNDR provides patients a secure platform to consult clinicians through on-demand text and video-based consultations, in addition to existing in-clinic services like STI screening and HIV medications.

In the future, the app will offer curated content and health insights to engage and educate patients. This will ensure continuity in care, decrease the risk of illness, and improve sexual health and well-being.

Clinic & Local Authority’s Outcomes

A scalable service offering can help to relieve the Local Authority (LA) of the burden of clinic overheads and allow them to operate a pay-as-you-go model for sexual health clinical services. By integrating LVNDR with existing clinical offerings, we can create a centralized hub for all sexual health services. This will not only meet the needs of patients but also increase cost-efficiency with a world-class offering.

The Process

The Process

To ensure that we stayed within budget and time constraints, we adopted a lean UX approach. We utilized a sprint-based design process to identify challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, healthcare providers, and stakeholders. We then designed and validated solutions to overcome these challenges.

We conducted a UX audit, analyzed existing research, conducted 50+ user interviews, and several workshops to gain insights into the problems faced by stakeholders.

Our primary focus was to let user research guide us, and we built a clear picture of our stakeholders (users, healthcare providers, and LAs) and our product offerings. We brainstormed and designed high-fidelity solutions based on our findings, which were later tested both internally and externally.

Throughout the design process, we fostered a highly collaborative environment within the product team and the wider LVNDR team. During the discovery and definition stages of the project, we conducted several workshops across multiple sprints. My colleague and I collaborated during the design phase to create solutions and worked closely with the engineering team to implement them.

In addition, I led the creation and maintenance of the design system to ensure consistency and accessibility in design across teams and efficient collaboration with the engineering team.

The project took over eight months to complete, and the following is the design process and outcomes.
